A gray room that's still bursting with color and fun! Heather tells us about the room she and her husband put together for Zoey: We wanted our daughter's room to be modern, creative, colorful, and a little bit fun and funky. We've been remodeling our house for the past two years, doing most of the work ourselves, so when I found out I was expecting - the baby's room, and finishing the interior of the house, became our main priority.
We started with a room that was kelly green with a plywood floor (see last photo). We painted the walls a neutral medium gray and had a gray short shag wall to wall carpet installed. Then, we found a mid century white lacquered dresser at our favorite local vintage store (Uptown Modern in Austin) to start the look of the room. I had purchased a vintage bird sunburst brass wall sculpture at an estate sale over a year ago and it had been sitting in the garage. I realized it would be a fun accent for the room, spray painted yellow of course.
We settled on the colors of gray, white, canary yellow, and deep pink for the room. The hot pink fawn lamp is from Urban Outfitters. We settled on a loose animal theme for the room - with the fawn lamp, the bird sculpture, and the framed animal art photos from Sharon Montrose on Etsy. The daybed is from West Elm and the pillows on the daybed are from Target and Homegoods. The crib was a find at Walmart from the Babymod line. We really wanted the Oeuf Sparrow crib but it just wasn't in our budget. So, we purchased the Babymod crib and customized it, again with canary yellow spraypaint. Before putting it together, we took the base which was a medium wood and didn't really go with the room, and sprayed it yellow.
The baby bedding is custom made by Etsy seller Rocky Top Design. I had a very hard time finding any baby bedding that I really liked and that went with the room. All of the bedding that I did like was completely out of our budget. So, I ordered the baby bedding fabrics from Quilt Home and had the bedding custom made for a fraction of the cost of some of the modern bedding that I liked.
The room is just about completed - we had new windows installed in the room and still need to replace the window sills, so you will see that is unfinished. We also intend to get some window coverings but haven't settled on what just yet.
