As part of NeoCon week, but extending well beyond (through July 31) Luminare is hosting an exhibit of the work of super-talented industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa. To kick off the event, Mr. Fukasawa was the honored guest at a lunch on Tuesday, which I was thrilled to attend.
The exhibit includes pieces for B&B Italia, Magis, Muji and, of course, Plus Minus Zero. From the large, striking Terra Tub to smart and simple paper house slippers, it is a perfect overview of one very creative man's work.
My favorite part of the event was when Mr. Fukasawa discussed the story behind his one slot toaster. He said that its just right for a single person, since a standard dual slot toaster has an unneeded slot for just one person. But the narrative really kicks in when he spoke about what he thought about the toaster being used by a couple - how it could be a ritual for one person to prepare the toast for their partner first, and then for themselves. Very sweet.
Definitely worth a visit to the third floor at Luminaire (301 West Superior), the exhibit will be in place through July 31.
