Let’s start by getting one thing out of the way: this is very painful for me.

As a lifelong, tried-and-true, loyal devotee to the cult of Basically Only Accenting With Black, it’s understandably hard for me to accept that another shade could be taking its place. But the design world has spoken, and navy is expected to leave its mark on 2017 in a big way. And wouldn’t you know it, I’ve warmed up to the look.

Unlike Pantone’s divisive Color of the Year, you should be ready to embrace navy with open arms. Think of it as your new favorite neutral: all of the rich intensity of decorating with black, minus the stark harshness that can sometimes come with too many dark tones. It’s pretty much a sure bet when it comes to working it into your home; from modern styles to farmhouse and everything in between, there’s a home for navy. So now that your style goals have been established, where to begin?

Let’s support each other on this journey, and start with some beautiful navy essentials that won’t break the bank. First, let’s look at the easiest part of changing up your home: little accents and accessories.

Now that we’ve dipped our toes into the world of navy, it’s time to move onto step two: bigger changes you can make in your home. New curtains and bedding are great ways to transform your decor without spending a ton.

You’re all in now, right? Finish off your look by investing in navy statement pieces. Things like a luxe velvet sofa or classic buffet act as anchors to your room.
