Simple household ingredients like white vinegar, lemon juice, cornstarch, and club soda are among the non-toxic solutions recommended by Body+Soul for stain removal.

With a little "grandmother knowledge" and time, you should be able to lift coffee, ink, tomato sauce, and other tough stains from clothing and other fabrics.

According to Body+Soul, there's a simple principle behind creating stain removers. Some stains respond to alkaline materials, which others respond to acids.

The magazine and site gives 14 specific stain removal tips – for example, a paste of equal parts corn starch and cold water will remove blood – and a general list of stain fighters like borax, an alkaline that they say works on acid and protein.
