Organic Modern Living Room: Get the Look
Lyndsay and Fitzhugh are talented designers who renovated their Brooklyn home and built much of the furniture themselves from reclaimed wood. Even if you’re not gifted with the ability to throw together a handmade sectional sofa, you can still be inspired by their accomplishments… and you can rely on our shopping guide for a similar look.
Seating
Montauk
Lyndsay and Fitzhugh actually built their own sofa, but if you don’t have the skills to DIY an entire couch, there are plenty of green sofa options. Canadian company Montauk, for example, creates made-to-order sofas. Shown: Modern Sectional, $8,000.
The Wendell Castle Collection
Artist and furniture maker Wendell Castle is an icon of the art furniture movement. He’s well-known for sculpting rare and beautiful hardwoods into organic, flowing forms like the ones in Lyndsay and Fitzhugh’s chair. Shown: Cloud Lounge, price on request.
Pillows and Throws
Madeline Weinrib Atelier
Painter and designer Madeline Weinrib is best known for her artisanally-crafted carpets, but she also makes pillows in her signature zig zag pattern. Available through ABC Carpet & Home, these are high-end, long-lasting pieces. Shown: Zig Zag Pillow, POR.
Burke Decor
Each year, it seems like more options appear on the market for green textiles — bamboo throws, organic cotton blankets, and recycled textiles can be found at boutiques and big box stores alike. Shown: Bamboo and Cotton Throw in Aqua, $90.
Tables
West Elm
A tree trunk table is a pretty simple DIY project, but if you’re looking for something a little more finished, West Elm has an affordable option made from fallen cypress trees. Shown: Natural Tree Stump Side Table, $200.
1st Dibs
If you’d prefer to save more trees by shopping for vintage wood, look for mid-century pieces in the style of George Nakashima. Although antiques can be pricey, they have a beautifully worn-in patina acquired over time. Shown: Vintage Tree Trunk Table, POR.
Artwork and Accessories
Jerilyn Virden Ceramics
To complement an organic modern aesthetic with artwork, look for pieces made from natural materials. Jerilyn Virden makes ceramic double-walled bowls that mimic the texture of smooth stone. Shown: Eddy, 2008, featured in American Craft Magazine.
Antique and Art Exchange
Antique art is another option when you’re looking for something with history, texture, and classic form. Antique African currency is highly collectible and comes in a wide variety of beautiful shapes. Shown: African Iron Currency, price on request.
Paint and Building Materials
American Barn Company
Shop at local salvage shops and lumber yards for reclaimed wood for renovations. One of our favorites is Chicago’s American Barn Company — an independently owned store that sells reclaimed barn wood salvaged from Midwestern demolitions.
Benjamin Moore
In Lyndsay and Fitzhugh’s living room, a backdrop of Benjamin Moore’s Super White keeps the look clean and modern. The Natura line, available in most Benjamin Moore colors, is non-toxic and totally free of Volatile Organic Compounds.
