Remember our post about outdoor entertaining in the winter? Here's a similar idea that takes even less planning - an outdoor winter picnic. When it's really bad outside, it makes sense to retreat to the cozy indoors for a board game and a cup of hot cocoa. But don't let the brisk cool air of January keep you locked inside.
Kids want to go outside no matter what the weather. So instead of fighting it, check your local weather forecast and plan an outdoor picnic for the next dry day. Pack a thick flannel blanket, thermoses of hot soup or hearty stew, bread, and clementines. Depending on where you go, you may be able to build a small fire in which case you can make s'mores!
