Piggy banks present a unique teaching opportunity; kids can learn about math, the value of a dollar and saving. Inspired by the 2008 birth of their daughter, Chicago husband-and-wife design team Materious came up with Piggy, which seeks to bring another message to the penny-saving experience, the lessons of sharing, charity and philanthropy.
Billed as "a philanthropic piggy bank set for kids," Piggy is actually a set of two banks, a "momma" bank for personal savings that nests together with a smaller bank for charitable giving. Materious encourages children to set aside 10% of their money for charity and suggests that parents talk to their kids about planning donations. Piggy is packaged in a quote box featuring passages about giving and generosity from the likes of Buddha, Churchill, Einstein, Anne Frank and Mahatma Gandhi. The banks are available in pale pink or white at the Art Institute of Chicago, Cite NYC and through Materious at GoodLittlePiggy.com. Materious donates 3% of their profits to Tabasamu.
