You Can Buy These Rare Pink Succulents That Look Like Roses on Etsy

They say trends come and go, but in the world of houseplants, we believe succulents are decidedly here to stay. So we’re always excited to discover new and aesthetically pleasing varieties of the low-maintenance plants to add to our plant families at home.

That’s why we’re over the moon for this latest discovery: Greenovia dodrantalis, also known as “mountain rose,” according to Southern Living. These pint-sized succulents, which come in a pretty pink hue as well as the more common blue-green shade, look exactly like roses thanks to their tightly packed leaves arranged in layers. 

Originating in the Canary Islands, this succulent doesn’t need much water and flourishes in a sunny, warm climate. It can grow to reach about six inches high and does well indoors or out. But if you live in an area where the temps drop to freezing, make sure you bring it indoors during the winter: it’s only in the clear in USDA Hardiness Zones 10 and 11.

Arrange a group of these together in your favorite planter to create a rose-like bouquet that will last much longer than the flower would. In fact, pups—also referred to as offsets (smaller versions of the succulent attached to it via thin stems)—may crop up over time. You can snip off and replant these smaller plants to easily propagate your mountain rose—which sounds like a good idea, considering how rare these are. The pink variety is even more difficult to find, so you may want to consider growing them from seeds. Note that, even though you can find mountain rose seeds online (Greenovia Aurea Succulent Seeds, $1.98, Amazon), it may take up to two years for your plant to develop a rose-like look.
