Head over heels for houseplants? You’re in good company. According to a survey from 2020, 70 percent of millennials identify as “plant parents.” These folks take pride in their green babies, with many plant connoisseurs sharing their sprawling collections on social media.

With so many plant varieties out there, it can be intimidating to choose the perfect one for your decor aesthetic and lifestyle. That’s where astrology comes in. The alignment of the planets at the moment of your birth offers insight into every aspect of your life and personality — including which type of plant best suits you. For instance, impulsive Aries would do well with a hardy houseplant that can withstand being forgotten, whereas methodical Virgo has the attentiveness to care for high-maintenance green babies.

Keep reading to find out which plant you should purchase this spring based on your zodiac sign. If you’re familiar with your full astrological birth chart, even better! Although your Sun sign is your primary astrological sign, you can also consult the blurb that corresponds with your Venus sign, which represents what you find beautiful and pleasurable.

Aries: Snake Plant

As a bold, extroverted Fire sign ruled by Mars, the planet of action and ambition, Aries stay busy. A hardy snake plant is the perfect fit for your lifestyle. This houseplant is famously difficult to kill, so there’s no need to fret about forgetting to water it once or twice. Plus, its tough, funky-looking leaves grow vertically and resemble swords. What more could the warrior of the zodiac ask for?

Taurus: Pothos

As a grounded Earth sign ruled by beauty-loving Venus, Taureans have a natural affinity for plants. You might already own a pothos or two, but if not, consider purchasing one of these vining beauties for your home. This ultra-popular, easy-to-grow plant is beloved for its chic look. It’s also easy to propagate, so if you take good care of your pothos, you could one day fill your home with its clippings.

Gemini: Calathea (Prayer Plant)

Geminis aren’t “two-faced” — rather, The Twins contain multitudes. As a mutable sign ruled by fast-moving Mercury, you adapt to your environment with ease. Your perfect plant, the Calathea, shares this quality. It’s sometimes called “the prayer plant” because of the daily movements of its leaves, which curl up at night and down during the day. Mercury governs all things multi-colored, so you’ll also appreciate the Calathea’s speckled look.

Cancer: Spider Plant

Cancers are ruled by the Moon, a planet closely associated with creation and fertility, but you don’t have to be an actual parent to fawn over the spider plant. This dainty, fast-growing houseplant sprouts mini spiderettes, which you can re-pot elsewhere once they grow roots. You’re an emotional Water sign, so this plant’s adorable “babies” will surely tug on your heartstrings.

Leo: Succulents

It’s no secret that Leos thrive in the spotlight. The Lion is the only zodiac sign ruled by the Sun, after all. For your ideal houseplant, succulents are the way to go. These resilient desert dwellers require little water but lots of direct sunlight, which you understand innately. As a charismatic Fire sign, you love to go out, so a low-maintenance succulent also suits your lifestyle.

Virgo: Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

As a practical Earth sign ruled by detail-oriented Mercury, Virgos are extremely methodical. You have the thoroughness and adaptability it takes to look after more finicky houseplants, such as the fiddle leaf fig tree. This regal-looking ficus is beautiful but very sensitive to overwatering and direct light. Under your attentive care, a fiddle leaf fig tree won’t just survive; it will thrive.

Libra: Peace Lily

Libras are ruled by Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and diplomacy. What better houseplant for you than a peace lily? This plant boasts lush, elegant leaves and distinctive white flowers, which also fall under Venus’ purview. As a chatty Air sign, you’ll appreciate how the peace lily communicates: Its leaves droop dramatically when it needs to be watered and perk right back up once you do so.

Scorpio: Tradescantia

Scorpios share Mars rulership with Aries, but your fixed nature grants you patience and discipline. You’re capable of caring for picky plants like the Tradescantia, which requires frequent watering. For you, this vining plant is totally worth the commitment: The Tradescantia’s velvety, earth-toned leaves resemble the foliage of fall, which coincides with your sign’s season in the Northern Hemisphere.

Sagittarius: Monstera (Swiss Cheese Plant)

When in doubt, Sags go big, not home. (Thank your ruling planet, Jupiter, which governs expansion and grand gestures.) Your sign will instantly gravitate toward the Monstera. This climbing evergreen is beloved for its holey, heart-shaped leaves. Its sprawling appearance and tropical vibe command attention — and as an expressive Fire sign with a larger-than-life personality, you can relate.

Capricorn: Kitchen Herbs

Capricorns are ruled by pragmatic Saturn, which makes you intentional with purchases. For you, functional kitchen herbs (think: basil, cilantro, or oregano) are the ideal houseplants. These easy-to-grow greens add an organic touch to any kitchen counter or windowsill, and their edible leaves make the perfect embellishment to any home-cooked meal.

Aquarius: Olive Tree

Aquarians share Saturn rulership with Capricorns, but as an innovative Air sign, you’re more of a nonconformist. For you, an olive tree is the ultimate houseplant. This gorgeous fruiting tree isn’t very common, so adding one to your home will help you stand out among your fellow plant parents. Just make sure your space gets enough sunlight to keep this plant happy.

Pisces: Money Tree

Spirituality inclined Pisces love anything with some lore attached to it. (This is also thanks to your planetary ruler, Jupiter, which is associated with wisdom traditions.) You’ll be enthralled by the money tree, a beginner-friendly houseplant that thrives in low-light conditions. This elegant tree is said to symbolize luck, another Jupiterian theme. It’s often given as a gift to promote prosperity for the recipient.
