Plant Room: A Small Space Clip-On Apartment Garden

Most apartment and small space dwellers can agree on something they envy of homeowners: outdoor and garden space. A group of New Zealand students share that jealously and are hoping to fix it with their clip-on garden in a box, Plant Room. It is literally a box bolted to the exterior of an apartment building, that will expand the square footage of your space, provide room for a vegetable garden, clothes line, rainwater collection and solar hot water production!

According to Project Manager, Tim Gittos, the idea of the Plant Room came from the basic idea to, "combine sustainability with cheaper energy and a desire to improve the landscape from inside, and out."

The Plant Room has been designed to do a number of things: provide hot water, grow herbs, vegetables and fruit, house a worm farm, and a rainwater tank. In addition to having the duel function of an outdoor space and enclosed room, the room will help shade the attached residence as well as temper the indoor air throughout the year.

The New Zealand-based student design team entered Plant Room into the Sustainable Habitat Challenge, and is now committed to building two prototypes of the design: one as a portable exhibition retrofitted in a shipping container, the second will be fitted onto an apartment building.
