One of the things I love most about my apartment is that it has a working fireplace. That may not sound like a big deal to most people, but in New York City apartments, a fireplace is about as rare as, well, actual space. In fact, whenever someone learns that I have a fireplace, their voice takes on a dreamy tone as they ask me if I use it all the time (uh, no) and then inevitably comment that they wish they had one.

Well, the good news is that they can. Anywhere Fireplace‘s Lexington Tabletop is an actual working fireplace that you can use in any area of your home—no chimney or firewood required—and it’s especially suited for small-space living.

At first glance, the Lexington Tabletop looks a bit like decorative art, with a curved, glossy base and two equally curved tempered-glass panels. So, uh, how does that become a fireplace? The base, which comes in black, white, red, beige, and stainless steel, has a burner that you fill with liquid fuel (sold separately), then simply ignite with a long wand lighter or a long match.

Once lit, the flames stay contained within the glass panels, and burn without emitting smoke or odors—and as someone who once forgot to open his chimney flue before starting a fire, I can promise you this is a very good thing. (Sorry, neighbors!) To extinguish the fire, just place the included snuffer handle over the burning opening. No need to wait for the fire to die down before heading out the door or going to bed.

With winter and the holidays approaching, the tabletop fireplace is perfect for creating a cozy ambience whether you’re entertaining guests in the living room or spending a snowy weekend binge-watching Netflix in the bedroom. In warmer seasons, it can act as a fire pit in your backyard or on your patio. And the best part? You’ll never have to chop or purchase wood when you want to get a fire going or sweep up soot or ash once it’s out.

Reviewers on The Grommet, where the Lexington Tabletop is sold, rave about its portability and versatility, and for making the impossible possible. As one reviewer put it: “Who knew we could have the experience of a fire in a small city apartment? This has made everything so cozy. A glass of wine and a movie in front of our tabletop fire…it’s the greatest!”
