Pottery Barn’s New NYC Flagship Focuses on Small Spaces, Easy Decorating

Pottery Barn has been going through quite an evolution this year. As average home sizes grew in the last half of the 20th century, so did their furniture. Now, the retailer is returning to their roots and catering to a smaller demographic—smaller in square footage, that is. Though their new New York flagship is anything but—the 17,000 square foot space in a 1904 Beaux Arts building on West 20th and 5th Ave opened today, and reflects the brand’s new direction in both design and services.

The new location is a bit of a homecoming for Pottery Barn; their first ever store opened in Chelsea back in 1949. “It’s exciting to come full circle by opening a flagship store in the city where it all began,” said Marta Benson, President of Pottery Barn, in a press release.

The retailer debuted its first ever small spaces collection back in January, and then expanded the line in July. This being New York City, smaller footprints will play a big part in what’s in stock at the location; Expect a “carefully curated assortment of apartment-ready, multi-functional furniture as well as a complete range of Pottery Barn’s distinct design aesthetics.” There will also be select vintage finds available.

The new space will be home to some new services, including a design initiative called The Package Deal – Home in a Box. In store designers curate pieces that are the foundation of a well-designed living room or bedroom, and help customers choose what works for them. Packages starting at $1,000, and new items and pricing tiers will be added seasonally.

The Design Crew, a new in store team, will also be on hand to help shoppers mix and match across Williams Sonoma’s portfolio of brands (which also include West Elm, PBteen, Williams Sonoma Home, and several more).

The retailer will also be partnering with local artists and makers, including a collaboration with international illustrator collective Women Who Draw to debut an exclusive line of art prints and linen tea towels inspired by iconic New York City landmarks and neighborhoods. They’re available at the new Flatiron flagship and on PotteryBarn.com.
