I have attended the last three AIA Los Angeles home tours. Each time I've discovered new inspiration and enjoy the opportunity to meet the architects behind the designs. Even though the homes are generally large in scale, I always find a design takeaway to incorporate into a smaller spaces, from color choices and possible DIY projects to kitchen layouts.

The Stoneridge Residence
Designed by David Thompson, Assoc. AIA - Assemblege +; Billy Rose

The Stoneridge Residence overlooks the San Fernando Valley and has an Olympic-sized infinity pool and Barragan inspired water feature. It combines the home's original exterior brick finish with expansive glass and dark steel support elements.

The Brentwood Residence
Designed by Cory Buckner, AIA - Cory Buckner Architects

The home's modern architecture and butterfly roof fits in with the surrounding post-war architectural community of Crestwood Hills. The views capture the Santa Monica Bay and city lights. The Brentwood Residence's tall walls serve as a blank canvas for the owner's art collection.

9312 Nightingale
Designed by Zoltan E. Pali, FAIA - Studio Pali Fekete architects [SPF:a]; Dugally-Oberfeld Builders

9312 Nightingale's architecture creates a C-shape, which overlooks its rectangular pool. Its views extend to Century City, the Pacific Ocean, and downtown Los Angeles. The master bedroom slightly cantilevers over the property's down slope.

15 Latimir Road
Designed by Rick Leslie, AIA - Rick Leslie Architects

15 Latimir Road is an impressive 7-level, 4700 square foot home. The contemporary home is also sustainable with a 6 KW PV system, solar pool and domestic hot water, radiant floor heating, 8" insulated walls, deep overhangs for summer solar protection, burnished CMU walls, extensive natural light & skylights, bamboo and bio-fiber flooring, bamboo cabinets, and very low VOC paints and mostly low water landscaping.

The "East and West of the 405" AIA Los Angeles Home Tours will take place on March 27, 2011, from 11:00AM - 4:00PM. To purchase tickets to the home tours, please visit the AIA's Home Tours website.
