Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Have Been Asked to Move Out of Frogmore Cottage

King Charles III has asked Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to vacate Frogmore Cottage, which had served as their official U.K. residence since 2019. A spokesperson from the couple’s Archewell organization confirmed the news with CBS after British newspaper The Sun first reported the story.

The royal property, which was first commissioned in 1801 by Queen Charlotte (yes, the one from “Bridgerton“), sits near Windsor Castle in Berkshire. And while the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have lived stateside for three years now, they have a rich history with Frogmore Cottage and the larger Frogmore House. Harry and Meghan took their engagement photos and held their private wedding party at Frogmore House. The late Queen Elizabeth II officially gifted the Frogmore Cottage to the couple in May 2019, shortly before the birth of their son Archie.

Buckingham Palace hasn’t commented or provided a reason.

As for who will move into the cottage next, The Sun and other publications claim that Charles hopes to offer it to his disgraced brother, Prince Andrew. Although Andrew currently lives in the larger Royal Lodge nearby, Vogue reports that because Charles expected to cut his annual grant, there are concerns that Andrew will no longer be able to afford to live there.

With their last official U.K. residence gone, it remains to be seen whether Harry and Meghan will attend Charles’ coronation on May 6, and where they will stay if so.

Luckily, Harry and Meghan are doing just fine in California, where they live in a sprawling nine-bed, 16-bath Santa Barbara mansion. In the meantime, the Montecito mansion where they filmed much of their Netflix docuseries was recently listed for $33.5 million.
