If you’re thinking of redecorating your bedroom, you’re probably trying to decide what color to use in your design. While most people tend to start with the best bedroom paint colors, like gray or blue, others decide to think outside the box and create a purple bedroom. Yes, that’s right – purple may not be a mainstream color when it comes to decorating your home, but it can be used to create a simply beautiful bedroom, depending on how you use it.

Opt for jewel tones to create a funky look, or go with a barely-there violet hue for an upscale, elegant look. Or, use the darkest purple you can find to channel similar vibes to a black bedroom. Any way you decide to do it, the color purple definitely has a place in the bedroom. Keep reading for some amazing purple bedroom design ideas.

Tips for Decorating a Purple Bedroom

Barry Brown, owner of Counter Culture DIY, shares some tips for designing a purple bedroom. “When selecting a paint color for the walls, opt for shades of purple that complement your desired aesthetic. For a sophisticated look, consider deep, jewel-toned purples like eggplant or amethyst. Lighter shades such as lavender or lilac can create a softer, more serene ambiance.”

Below, Brown shares a few other design tips:

  • Lighting. Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood of a room. For a purple bedroom, consider using warm, soft lighting to enhance the cozy and inviting ambiance. Use dimmer switches or layered lighting options to create different levels of illumination for various activities and moods.
  • Neutrals. Use neutral tones like white, cream, or gray for furniture, curtains, or bedding to create a harmonious balance and prevent overwhelming the space.
  • Metallic Accents. Incorporate metallic accents in silver, gold, or bronze to add a touch of glamor and sophistication to the room. This can be done through accessories like picture frames, mirrors, lamps, or decorative accents.
  • Complementary Colors. Wondering what colors go with purple? Purple pairs well with complementary colors like green and yellow. Consider adding pops of these colors through artwork, pillows, or plants to create visual interest and contrast.
  • Vintage Elements. Incorporate vintage elements, such as an antique dresser or bedside table, to add character and a sense of history to the room.

Purple Bedroom Ideas

Based on the tips we’ve shared above, here we’ll present a round-up of some of our favorite purple bedroom decorating ideas.

1. Coordinate with yellow.

This lovely dark purple bedroom is found in a tiny Brooklyn bedroom. The owner has expertly combined bright colors to offset this moody purple accent wall that’s totally apropos, despite the room’s diminutive size.

2. Paint a two-toned wall.

This Los Angeles bedroom features purple paint, but the owner has chosen to use coral as well for a beautiful, beachy vibe. The two colors perfectly complement one another, while small pops of colors all over the room expertly pull the look together.

3. Just a touch of purple.

It’s difficult to tell if the paint color in this Brooklyn bedroom is purple or white. That’s thanks to the super-light tint that opens the room up while still creating a soft, inviting atmosphere. Light-colored bedding and sparse decor lend to the clean vibe of this pretty light purple bedroom.

4. Lighten it up with white.

The medium purple paint color doesn’t overwhelm this Argentina bedroom in the least, thanks to lots of white that beautifully offsets the darker hue. Thick white baseboards, flowy white floor-length curtains and white bedding all work together to lighten things up and create an elegant aesthetic.

5. Incorporate jewel tones.

This Australian bedroom is the definition of maximalist, with deep tones and lots of decor. The royal purple bedding is combined with lots of accents in beautiful jewel tones like magenta and mustard yellow.

6. Dark and moody.

This dark purple bedroom in a California home is one of our favorite examples of how purple can be used in a home to create something truly fantastic. Two-toned purple bedroom walls are lightened up by a dramatic illuminated wall sign, and dark purple bedding (and even a purple headboard!) complete the look.

7. Bring in purple bedding.

Though the majority of this bedroom is cream-colored (which makes this a perfect look to snag if you live in an apartment and can’t paint the walls), the purple bedding gives it a similar vibe as any purple bedroom. Calm and inviting, this bright room by @ninininimood features perfect purple accents too, like the throw rug and faux purple flowers.

8. Contrast it with green.

In this striking French bedroom by @karolynmartindesigner, dramatic green bedding pops against deep purple walls adorned with vintage wall hangings. It’s certainly a memorable look that’s both upscale and whimsical.

9. Add a purple couch.

This zen-like bedroom by @serenity_space_by_gisele is anchored by a beautiful purple seating area that features a pretty purple couch. A purple throw blanket and purple bedroom rug tie the seating area into the rest of the room, creating a cohesive look.

10. Give it a rustic vibe.

In this clever light purple bedroom by @ellenlaffertydesign, painted bricks and a rough-edged wooden beam are just some of the elements that lend a rustic vibe to this beautiful space. A vintage bench adds to the sense of warmth and elegance, as does the white bedding.

11. Understated and elegant.

Purple accents in the floral bedding give this purple bedroom by @avaloninteriorshome a decidedly adult look. Cream-colored furniture and a dark purple lamp for the bedroom keep things from giving a funky vibe, which can sometimes happen in a purple bedroom.

12. Go with a brownish purple hue.

This modern purple bedroom by @decorqtcom might be made with a little one in mind, but these elements would be totally beautiful in an adult bedroom as well. We love the unique brownish-purple hue, the clean white accessories and the minimalist vibe.
