Much of mid-century interior decorating was being unafraid to go bold—and this often presented itself in bold wallpaper paired with even bolder curtains (bonus points if the wallpaper and curtains actually matched, and even more bonus points if you upholstered your couch in the same pattern).

Reese Witherspoon seemingly took some inspiration from the era of statement wallpapers and printed curtains when decorating her dining room. But her take on the retro aesthetic has an elegant vibe.

“Nothing better than quality mother-daughter time explaining TikTok, internet memes and how the @reesesbookclub app works to my cute mom!” Witherspoon captioned her adorable March 6 Instagram post.

Though Witherspoon didn’t get mid-century bonus points for carrying that blue-and-white geometric design over to her floor-length curtains, she absolutely won in the mix-and-match category. Her robin’s egg blue curtains pair perfectly with the blue pattern on the wall (as do the varying blues of the trim), but the boho tassels take the aesthetic out of the 20th century and into the modern era.

As Witherspoon exemplified, matching your curtains to your wallpaper can be done without reading tacky. And if you’d like to follow her lead, check out this look-alike paper from Wayfair (it’s currently on sale for less than $4 a roll).

These curtains from Bed Bath & Beyond not only pull that denim color from the above wallpaper pattern, but the “light filtering” pattern is reminiscent of the tassels on Witherspoon’s curtains. Of course, if you are itching for a good DIY project, grab yourself some matching tassel trim and get to sewing (or gluing, of course).

The matchy-matchy look clearly works, and as Witherspoon shows us, you don’t have to be a mid-century lover to appreciate the quirkiness of it all.
