Last week, I wrote a post featuring 10 restaurant interiors to inspire your kitchen renovation. The first one, the gorgeous bar area from Atlanta's King + Duke restaurant, featured a marble-clad bar with a thick wood counter. To get the look at home, I suggested modern wood cabinets and a marble countertop, or a thick wood countertop paired with a marble backsplash. But even as I wrote the words, I hesitated. Marble and wood in a kitchen? Would that I actually look good? Well, after a little 'research' (thanks, Pinterest!) I am happy to report: yes. Marble and wood in the kitchen is a thing, and it is fantastic.

I love that this kitchen feels so modern, and yet so warm — and I think we have those beautiful rustic wood cabinets to thank. The finishes that are 'hot' for kitchens right now — marble, subway tile, brass — can often end up reading lovely but a bit cold, so a little rustic wood is the perfect thing to balance them all out and add just the right amount of warmth and texture. Of course, there are plenty of ways to go about this. This kitchen has a marble countertop, and a mix of a white and wood cabinets. Little things that I love: the luxe, thick edge detail on the countertop; the way the wood cabinets and the wood floor coordinate with one another; and the way the marble returns to the floor at the end of the cabinet. The kitchen in Sam & Anne's Austin home features that same detail. They've added some additional elements to the mix — concrete, stainless steel — that give their kitchen a rustic/industrial vibe. The whole thing is really beautifully detailed — you'll want to click through to take a walk around the whole thing.

There's something incredibly appealing in the way the veining in this marble and the striations in this plywood speak to each other. It's like they're twins, separated at birth. Spotted on Emmas Designblogg.

This kitchen, spotted in T Magazine, has a lovely, old-school feel, thanks in part to the burl-wood island with its marble countertop.

There's that detail we've seen before, with a marble countertop returning to the floor (in this case at the end of an island). It's a sleek look that nicely balances out the rustic wood cabinetry. Interior by Robson Rak Architects.

The detailing and choice of woods in this kitchen give it a midecentury feel — proof that the combo of marble + wood is incredibly versatile. Joanna Laven for Elle Decoration.

And finally, wood cabinets and a marble countertop from the kitchen of Kitchn editor Faith Durand. The light marble and the dark wood complement one another perfectly.
