Q: My husband and I live in an apartment, a tri-plex of sorts, and we are expecting our first baby in the spring. We haven't yet told our landlord as we are expecting him to be less than thrilled by the news and that he will almost certainly increase our rent. Because he pays for water and we know that having a new baby around will significantly increase the amount of laundry we do (we use the washer and dryer for free), we understand that some increase in the rent is probably fair. However, we really have no idea how much of an increase is justified. Any advice would be very helpful because we are no longer bound by a lease and we are apprehensive that our landlord may use this situation to try and increase our rent significantly.

Editor: Even though we had a lease, we were a little apprehensive about letting our landlord knew we were expecting, too, but he was happy for us and has continued to be the great landlord he always was. Has anyone had the opposite reaction? Any advice for Bree?
