Zillow reports that renting costs about twice as much as buying. In the third quarter of 2014, US renters could expect to spend about 30% of their incomes on rent, while those buying homes could expect to spend just 15% of their monthly incomes on their mortgage payment. Even homeowners with smaller down payments spent about 17% of their income on their mortgage.
