Repair, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Fixing a Laser Printer

With the low cost of electronics, it's tempting to chuck something out and replace it when it breaks. But some things really will last forever with a little bit of maintenance and a bit of know-how...

...which fortunately comes included in the package from, along with the tool you may need for the job. Our kit included a replacement part, detailed step by step directions, and photographs showing the tricky steps. The repair took care of our printer's nasty habit of pulling through several pages at a time, and it cost only $20—a lot less than a new laser printer, even on sale. Plus, we will not be creating more e-waste.

We're thinking the three R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) might benefit from a fourth: repair.

Thanks, Clare! Photo: Jonathan Bean
