When Andreas Meinke first toured this one-bedroom rental apartment in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, in 2019, he had a disappointing first impression. “I was met with less than ideal living conditions, courtesy of the previous tenants who had left it in a state of disrepair,” Meinke shares.

However, Meinke continued the tour, and that proved to be a good decision. “As soon as my eyes fell upon the charming brick wall, I instantly knew that this was the place I wanted to call home and transform into my own unique living space,” Meinke says.

While the space’s aesthetics needed some updating, the home’s bones were incredible. The property used to be a historic school building that was broken into apartments 20 years ago. So Meinke’s apartment is essentially a repurposed classroom with tall ceilings. “Each apartment boasts a unique design, making it quite intriguing to explore the different living spaces of my neighbors,” he explains.

Meinke, alongside his parents, spent the next four months restoring the home. They painted, extensively cleaned, scoured secondhand stores for furnishings, and even removed a wall, which Meinke describes as a project that was “uncharted territory.”

Their hard work paid off. Meinke and his family transformed his space into an airy, calming, mid-century modern haven. While the brick wall remains Meinke’s favorite part about the apartment, it’s hard to pick a best-loved aspect of this home.
