Rescuing a Rental Kitchen on a Budget?

Q: I adore this site! How can I rescue this rental kitchen from the depths of brown and tan laminate and cabinetry? I live in a rental building and am on quite a tight budget, so I can't give this kitchen the complete face-lift it deserves, but any advice from the cabinets, to the lighting, flooring, counter tops, and storage would be much appreciated!

Editor: Anne- that is a lot of brown! Have you spoken to your landlord about the possibilities? The biggest bang for your buck would be painting the cabinets if you are allowed. If not, perhaps try darkening the finish of the cabinets using Howard Restor-a-Finish (buy one of the dark tones rather than the one that matches your cabinets- it wipes on with no sanding/refinishing required). Changing the floor would also make a big difference, and new vinyl flooring is often very affordable at big box hardware stores (check for remnants depending on the size of your space).

Readers, do you have any additional recommendations for Anne?
