After years of cool toned rooms dominating the Room for Color contest winners circle, we just took a move in a totally new direction. Our Grand Prize winner is the "Warm" Division finalist entry; a room defined by the use of a bold and bright red. The International winner has walls of a similar hue. Looks like things are heating up everywhere! Here's our take on the rooms that came out on top...
Kellie lives in Marina Del Rey, so it's no surprise that she looked to the beach as a point of inspiration for her living room decor. What is surprising is the colors she used. Rather than going for the more-expected blues, she rocked out the red, bringing the warmth indoors, with just a touch of turquoise to set it off.
The bright red walls help define the fireplace as the focal point of the room, but the drama doesn't stop there. A triptych of oversized black and white photos of the beach provide another unexpected, slightly edgy reference to the California lifestyle. The dark brown color of the wood floors are echoed in the floor to ceiling drapes, fireplace surround and floating bookshelves, while providing a perfect backdrop to the boldly patterned rug. Kellie's final nod to a day at the beach? Gold accents, from twin cocktail tables to a classic sunburst mirror.
Jane's room is all about a fearless, joyful use of color! Inspired by a comic-strip-style portrait done by a friend, Jane embraced the same bright, warm colors throughout her room, including the showstopper piece, a classic sofa reupholstered in both a lime green velvet and a red geometric print.
The bold combination of colors is done with skill. She carefully balances all of the brights with doses of black and white to help anchor the room. A savvy color tip from Jane: "If you're using lots of color for an eclectic look then stick with either bold primary colors or pastels but never combine the two." Good advice!
