Save Money By Checking For Apps Before Buying

So, you're getting ready to buy your next device. The trouble is that with all of the apps that are available for smartphones (over 100,000 for the iPhone alone), there might be an app that could replace that new device that you're about to purchase.

The iPhone, just like other smartphones, is a marvel. There are so many things that you can do with it and there are naturally so many apps that you can buy that we think that it's worth a gander to see if you can replace that new device you want to get with a simple app.

This is what Fred Wilson over at A VC learned. Wilson says that he was trying to find a better way to enter text into his HTPC. His first instinct was to buy an Apple Wireless Keyboard and a Gyration Air Mouse, which set him back $160. Unfortunately, this didn't go well. He had trouble setting them up. He could never reliably connect them via Bluetooth to his Mac Mini or his MacBook Pro.

After having utterly failed, he decided to take his friend Andrew Parker's advice: using the Mobile Air Mouse app from the iTunes store for $2.

So in frustration, I pulled out the iPod touch we use as a Sonos and Boxee remote in our family room and downloaded the Mobile Air Mouse app from the iTunes store for $1.99. You have to download free "server software" for the device from the Mobile Air Mouse website as well.

And you know what? They worked great! That's a $2 app that replaces $160 worth of hardware. We think that you can use Wilson's experience to try and rethink some of you purchases, that is if you have a smartphone or an iPod Touch already.
