Oh, what we wouldn't give to have AT reader Se7en's problem right now. She and her family of ten (that's right: two parents and eight kiddos) live in beautiful, sunny Cape Town, South Africa, where it is hot, hot, hot. To beat the heat without sacrificing comfiness, she moved a big sofa right outside onto a previously unused bit of patio, where it stays in a cool patch of shade for most of the day. (If you like this little set-up, click through to check out the view from the sofa.)
Says Se7en of this simple-yet-inspired bit of furniture relocation (which she blogs about here on her website):
I adjourn there after lunch and just being there in the afternoon means everyone knows where to find me… and I get a number of visitors, lots of lovely chats and funny events, lots of lectures, lots of stories, but a picture tells a thousand million words.
What makes this set-up really work (other than the absolutely lovely view) is the rich blue color of the sofa and exterior wall, along with the wonderful mix of patterns -- madras, stripes and batik -- in the pillows and blankets. This definitely beats white plastic furniture any day of the week.
