Whoever designed airplanes did not have people in mind. You don't need to be 6'3" to feel like an airplane ceiling is too low. Everyone, even people who are 5' feel like they're going to hit their head on the overhead storage bin every time they get out of their seat. And those seats? You always feel like your knees are digging into the back of the person in front of you. There is never enough space on airplanes!
While some airlines certainly have more space (or way less) than others, it is pretty universal that most people feel uncomfortable while sitting in an airplane seat. Even if it is just for two hours, it can be tough to get comfy. At least people sitting in the window seat can lean against the window to get an inch or two of more room for comfort.
Did you know that there is extra space hiding in the aisle seat? Apparently, there is a secret button you can push to get extra space! And no, this secret button is not the recline button.
To find the button, you're going to put your hand underneath the aisle armrest near the hinge. You should feel it right there. By pressing the button, you can move the armrest up so it right next to the back of your seat.
This might seem like a minor move, but for anyone who has felt cramped in by the armrest, this is like a godsend. This way, you don't have to worry about the armrest not actually giving your arm any rest. You won't want to totally hangover into the aisle, because that drink cart will get you, but this move does give you a little room to breathe.
Paired with the recliner function, you might actually be able to rest on your next flight! This is also a super useful tip to know when you're getting off the plane. How many times has your purse or carry-on bag snagged on the armrest when you were trying to exit the plane (because everyone is giving you judgy-eyes for not moving fast enough)?
If you struggle to sleep on airplanes, you can read this guide on how to get comfortable enough to sleep. Just be thankful that standing seats aren't on airplanes – yet. We'd never get any sleep then!
