Walking into this home you immediately know that an artist lives here. Eclectic mixes of patterns, materials, and colors all perfectly meld together into making one perfectly cohesive creative home. Although the home and style is constantly changing, something Sharlene likes to call “evolutionary” design, I have no doubt that whatever it changes into it’s always full of life and vibrancy… and of course is animal-friendly.

Sharlene says, “Kevin and I met in Miami where we were both living. Four years later we moved to Los Angeles, which immediately felt like home. We raised our two daughters here (one currently in college and the other doing post-graduate work). The other family members include two dogs, Rosie and Barley, and three cats, Eloise, Tuco, and Phoebe.

I am a self-taught artist, specializing in torn handmade-paper collages. I also have a passion for design, which includes moving furniture, pillows, and throws around on the daily.”

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: An eclectic mix of old and new, neutral and color, organic and straight lines, high and low, and some art mixed in. That about covers it.

Inspiration: Endless! Museums, art galleries, flea markets, store display windows, Pinterest, Instagram…

Favorite Element: The character of our 92-year-old home. (Calvin Coolidge was president when our house was built in 1927)! I love the high ceilings, the arches, the hand-painted entryway ceiling, the master bedroom barrel ceiling, and the oversized windows. I also love all the trees surrounding us here at the foothills of Angeles National Forest.

Biggest Challenge: Pulling it all together! I practice what I call “evolutionary” design, in that I generally don’t have a set plan of design (that I stick to anyway). I add layer after layer, piece by piece over time until it’s done. But since I change my mind so often, it’s almost never done!

What Friends Say: “Your home is so YOU!” (I take that as a compliment)!

Biggest Embarrassment: The un-renovated master bath has a landline phone… that’s making a comeback, right??

Proudest DIY: Pulling it all together! I’m also proud to display my artwork, especially since each piece is really a labor of love.

Biggest Indulgence: Art and antiques. As an artist, I really appreciate the uniqueness and individuality of each art piece.

Best Advice: Fill your house with things that make you happy. Be authentic in your design, and don’t worry about what other people might think.

Dream Sources: In reading over my sources, apparently it’s Etsy and flea markets!
