We may have reached peak shiplap for walls, but there’s a new spot where planks feel so much fresher: The ceiling. Though they’re often coupled with high ceilings (like the design above by Dan Scotti Design), planks have a rustic feel that adds a cozy touch to a wide variety of spaces.

Plank-style ceilings aren’t unusual to find in an enclosed porch or sunroom like this beautiful space by Looney Ricks Kiss. But, like the way planks can make a bigger room feel cozy, the warm-hued wood adds an intimate feel to smaller spaces.

Whitewashed tongue-and-groove pine adds interest to the finished basement, as seen on The DIY Mommy. Here, the wood helps further the industrial-chic look that the homeowner wanted to achieve in this space.

Christina of Christina’s Adventures designed and constructed the wood ceiling in her similarly industrial-chic kitchen. The natural texture really draws the eye in the small space.

Plank ceilings can also cover a multitude of less-than-ideal ceiling features. In the master bedroom of Cindy from Edith & Evelyn Vintage, whitewashed planks gracefully cover up the popcorn ceiling that was originally in the space.

Planks stained to a natural finish help “segment” the largely open floor plan of a Newport Beach, California home into distinct spaces. Designed by Kelly Nutt Design, the planks offer a transitional element between the kitchen and living room area.

While color offers drama, sometimes a simple white ceiling can be just what a room needs. In this renovated kitchen by Kristi of Chatfield Court, simple white planks draw the eye up. Even better? They’re pre-primed and budget-friendly (they’re a Home Depot find!).

Or, you can opt for charcoal-hued planks, like in this sophisticated room by Tamara Magel featured in Elle Decor. The dark hue makes the white walls seem even brighter while complementing the dark mantel and black sofa.
