How Green is your paint? The more we learn about solvent-based paints, the more important using VOC-free paint is in our own home, especially when that home has children in it.

We recently had the chance to see a room painted by products from Bio Paints, an Antipodean company that prides itself on using old-fashioned paint recipes that call for all-natural ingredients, and we were impressed both with their color palette and their commitment to the environment. Bio Paints are VOC-free, environmentally friendly, and completely biodegradable. At right, a few of their testpots. $6.00 NZD gets you 100ml of paint, to test in your own home before purchase. Below, a few of our favorite color palettes from Bio Paints.

Below is a bathroom done in Bio Paints, both walls and floor. Love the chair! Paint stripes are an easy way to get some pattern up on the walls. These are Bio Paints Enamel in in green(P14) and blue(p15).

There is something about red and pink together that we think would dynamite in an older girl's room. It isn't for everyone, but for the right girl, this would be an over the top fabulous color. The mock damask is done via paint and stencil, in Bio Paints Enamel colors pink (P17) and red(P16).

Bio Paints also does floors. Their stone oil can be used on concrete, or to create the look of concrete on hardi-board, which we think would be an interesting treatment if you need to cover a wall and want a more natural look.

We are so happy to see companies that are involved in the design of living spaces also be involved in caring about the environment. If you would like to learn more about them, Bio Paints has a nice FAQ on their web site, and they do ship outside of New Zealand. Those lucky enough to live in New Zealand can visit their shop in Nelson.
