Creativity Explored is a nonprofit visual arts center where artists with developmental disabilities create, exhibit, and sell art.
Their store not only sells art, but products such as t-shirts, notecards, books and DVDs, all featuring the work of their member artists. People from around the world collect their artwork. If you like outsider, nave, self-taught, and folk art, take a look at their online gallery and store, or drop by their San Francisco location.
AT: SF reader Miki writes: "I attended their "nature rules" art opening last night; it's such an amazing place that AT aficionados have got to know about it. Sure, we can all have some exquisitely tasteful, garden-variety Rothko prints, et al. gracing our ecru walls, but why would we do that when there are such incredible local artists showing and selling their work at Creativity Explored?
These artists happen to be developmentally disabled, but that's completely beside the point. SEE the work, and its talent needs no qualifiers. This isn't charity or therapy or some fuzzy feel-good thing; it's art.
Last night at CE I bought an amazing pop culture piece painting on plywood. Style-wise it reminds me of the best contemporary Mississippi folkart, but with an urban twist. It celebrates WWF wrestling w/ wonderful graphic sensibility, lots of text -- sort of an illustrated wresting incantation. It's hanging above the tv in my little Deco studio, and I love it already."
Keep an eye out for Creativity Explored's art openings in our Weekly Events Calendars.
