Store History

  • Founded: 1817
  • Founded by: George Friedrich Horn
  • Headquarters: Hornberg, Germany

Earlier this month I visited Duravit's headquarters in the Black Forest of Germany — and, of course, I was excited to see the giant Philippe Starck toilet built into the facade of their offices. Oversized bathroom fixtures aside, I was really there to preview the lines scheduled to launch later this year, and the most interesting ones (in my opinion) came from Viennese design firm EOOS.

Martin Bergmann, Gernot Bohmann and Harald Gründl of EOOS

Martin Bergmann, Gernot Bohmann and Harald Gründl are the three key thinkers behind EOOS. They're known for experimenting with folding and transformative shapes — in recent years, they've earned attention for the folding B2 kitchen they designed for Bulthaup and their mini sauna for Duravit. Their 2011/2012 collection plays with space in two directions: 1) compact multi-function designs for small spaces and 2) expansive flotation and two-person tubs for luxury bathrooms.

Universal Bath Covers

On the compact front, they've created OpenSpace, a glass box on hinges that folds out from the wall when you're ready to shower and collapses back against itself when you're finished. Similarly space-saving, their Universal Bath Covers are upholstered cushions that can be used to cover a bathtub — one works as a bath tray, and multiples transform the top of the tub into a seat.

Nahho Flotation Tub

Nahho, on the other hand, was designed to feel expansive. Named after the Old German word for a "wooden canoe," this wide flotation tub attempts to recreate a sense of floating in the sea, surrounded by open water on all sides. A neck support — inspired by African carved wood headrests — keeps one's body level, while a hinged panel conceals the faucets.

The Paivo Tub, first designed 8 years ago and recently updated, is EOOS' take on a two-person bathtub. Its previous incarnation included a stepped platform, but the new design is a one-piece corner tub.
