Store History

  • Founded: 2006
  • Founded by: Terry Stone

Farmstead Mercantile is a nod to the past with a firm grasp on the present. Billed  as a new kind of country store, you'll find an eclectic mix of new, vintage and antiques wares, many of which are made in the USA. Shop co-owner, Jonathan Stone, sat down with us to give us a little history of the store.

Name/Title: Jonathan Stone/Co-Owner

Open date: 2012 – Farmstead is the continuation and expansion of a former "country" store started by my mother, Terry Stone, in 2006. We renovated the building over last summer and opened a new second floor antiques and arts space.

Inspiration for  The shop is located in a barn that was once part of a historic farmstead. We share the property with the original farmhouse. Farmstead re-imagines the country store that my mother started nearly 7 years ago. Using our setting as inspiration, we asked ourselves – what is country? The result is what we call a modern family’s farmhouse. It is a place that can be lived in in many ways and reflect many styles from vintage to formal, fancy, or primitive. During the holidays we are inspired by a "farmhouse" Christmas and transform the shop into a winter wonderland, making us one of the largest Christmas shops in the area.

Merchandise source: All of our furniture is made in the U.S. — most of it is made in Rhode Island. Our antique dealers come from as far as the Boston metro area and our artists are primarily local. The majority of what we sell is made in the U.S. however we do carry smaller inexpensive gift items that are imported.

Best selling item: Our best selling item is a jar candle by 1803 Candle Company. The candles are made in Illinois from local, American grown soy. It is a holdover from our country store days. We have yet to find another candle that is as fragrant and long lasting for the price. We have nearly 40 scents from this line.

Your favorite item: Naming one item is difficult… a local craftsperson builds a gorgeous zinc top table for us. He uses a solid sheet of zinc (most furniture makers do not) over a solid hardwood frame. That table has inspired a custom kitchen wall unit as well as other designs. Imagine the zinc nailing detail along the face of shelving!

Favorite store (other than your own): There are so many stores out there that we admire … architectural salvage, stores with amazing interior design, stores with incredibly curated product selections, and so on. That being said, our favorite shop currently is a small little store in our town called The Wooden Midshipman. It is an eclectic mix of books, gifts, and art and the shopkeeper Katie is amazing!
