Store History

  • Headquarters: Los Angeles

After many trips to big box hardware stores to try and decide on coordinating paint colors, I prefer the boutique paint store. Portola Paints has received rave reviews because of their personal approach, zero-VOC paints, hand painted color swatches and fan decks, and custom color matching. The store was founded by Los Angeles contractor Jim Davis and his two sons, Casey and Jamie. All paints are made locally in small batches and every color is mixed-to-order in the store.

Portola paints specializes in Eco-Friendly finishes and Old World techniques. If you want to give a lighting fixture or furniture piece a worn or antique look, their wrought iron finish combined with Portola's Rust Solution weathers the piece in just a few hours. They encourage customers to come into the store and play around with color swatches in their upstairs loft. Casey and Jamie's background in construction offers customers a trained eye for choosing the right paint color for their space and lighting situation.

As a side note, the roll of brown paper featured above is used to test different paints. However, a few customers have fell in love with its abstract art quality and have actually requested to purchase it to use as gift wrap. Our little secret — when I visited recently, they were currently offering small sheets of the paint splattered brown paper free of charge.
