Recently we at Unplggd were invited to the Savant Manhattan Design Center in SOHO to see their home automation system in action. Savant designs, develops and manufactures a complete suite of integrated solutions that are truly bringing in a new age of home automation. The Design Center was set up like a very tech tricked out apartment. It was quite fun milling around a tech lover's dream home.

Savant delivers home control and automation, multi-room audio/video, advanced digital audio and video processing, extremely flexible and scalable audio/video switching, digital media server and jukebox capabilities, and an array of integrated applications and services. In addition to being the only Apple-based control and automation solution, they were also the first company to introduce a native iPhone and iPod touch application delivering complete home control and automation.

The sumptuous apartment designed by Thom Filicia, fully showcases the systems capabilities with a fully automated master bedroom and bathroom, music/piano area and media room. There is also a roughly 800 sq. ft. dedicated home theater crafted by world renowned theater designer and industry legend Theo Kalomirakis, a fully functional kitchen by Dahlia Kitchen Design, and complete lighting design provided by Sylvia Bistrong from ISP Design, Inc.

One of our favorite parts of the tour was the touchscreen by NuVision that was located in the kitchen. This touchscreen allowed for television viewing, internet browsing, and of course controlling the lighting and the music. We could not help but think of how this was the perfect solution for a kitchen computer.

Because the system was based on OS X, it was easy to use, possessing similar controls, gesture wise to the iPhone and iPod Touch. The system was intuitive and navigation through a variety of controls whether for media, lighting, or security was quick and easy.

We were impressed by Savant and would love to have this system in our own homes. Savant is one smart, well designed, incredible home automation system. Now, if we only had a home that had half as much gorgeous tech as this apartment...

What do you think? Home automation, lust or must?
