A sure sign of a good kids product is that parents would be happy to use it for themselves. And a sure sign of a great diaper bag is that you'd want to use it long after you're carrying diapers around. So Young Mother delivers on both these fronts with a small, but meticulously designed collection of lunch and lifestyle bags which are equal parts attractive and functional.
The mother (and now businesswoman) behind So Young Mother is Catherine Choi who I had a chance to meet at the Playtime New York tradeshow last month. She is elegant and well-spoken yet accessible and down to earth and it was clear that her products are an extension of herself and an expression of her sensibilities.
So Young Mother offers two "lifestyle" bags - a subtle linguistic choice signaling their aesthetic departure from a traditional diaper bag - the Emily and the Charlie. Both have all the features you want for housing and organizing yours and your child's things, but allow you to go incognito to a meeting, appointment or lunch with a friend without broadcasting, "hey, I've got diapers in here!" The Charlie Bag (sold out until Sept.) is intentionally father-friendly with a canvas exterior in three earthy colors. Charlie sells for $145 and Emily for $105.
The cooler bags and lunch boxes (both are insulated) have a coated linen exterior to provide a fresh, classic look while still being practical and simple to wipe down and clean. They're PVC-free, phthalate-free, and lead safe as well. Both come with straps (detachable) for hands-free wearing or for looping over your stroller. The graphics are simple and sweet. The cooler bags sell for $27.95 and the larger lunch boxes for $29.95.
