Following up on our guide to green stores in Portland, Oregon, reader 'Phoenix' tipped us off that the city's amazing tool-lending program has expanded. A new non-profit service for DIYers just opened in Southeast Portland!

The SEPTL follows the same model as its sister program, the Northeast Portland Tool Library. They explain the system pretty well in their FAQ:

"It's a lending library, but with tools instead of books. And it's more than that really. It's a way to meet your neighbors, a way to reduce consumption by sharing, and a way to build a strong and vibrant community."

Located in the St. David's Episcopal Church at SE 28th Place and Harrison, the library is run by volunteers, operates using donated tools, and is open to members for limited hours on Tuesdays and Saturdays. They list their available tools online, and members can stop by and checkout tools on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tool returns are due on Saturdays, and the library charges fees for late returns. Membership is free, just like a regular public library.
