Maison De JAM is my studio apartment in the Marina District in San Francisco. As a professional interior designer, it was my first time fully designing my own house exactly in the way that I wanted. No roommates, no significant other, just me and my style. My goal was to make it as feminine and glam as possible, taking risks with bold color and an abundance of pink as well as making a studio apartment feel as large as I possibly could. I truly wanted a retreat and a place where guests could walk in and say, “Wow, this apartment is SO YOU.”

My Style: 1970s Glamour Gal meets 1980s Birdcage Funk meets Parisian Dollhouse

Inspiration: Milo Baughman, Brigitte Bardot, The Beverly Hills Hotel, Palm Beach in the early 1980s

Favorite Element:  I am so obsessed with my oversized vintage coffee table I got off Craigslist for $30. It so perfectly displays my collection of books and objects from my travels!

Biggest Challenge: Obviously my apartment is really small, so I had to be smart about the way I divided the space without having walls. I was able to divide my living room from my bedroom by purchasing a canopy bed that almost gives the illusion of a wall. It was such a great way to break up my space!

Proudest DIY: Because I’m an interior designer I needed a place to display my inspiration. I ended up using a cork board with clippings of inspo from my favorite publications. The result ended up feeling like an oversized art piece and was the perfect way to add interest to my rental without making any permanent changes! I ended up leaning it against the wall which gave a Parisian vibe.

Biggest Indulgence: My vintage Lucite and sheepskin chairs were a few grand. They came as a set of four but I was able to talk the dealer down to giving me two! They are my prized pieces and I always like to think about what fabulous person owned them before me.

Best Advice: Don’t let your rental stop you for expressing yourself through your design style. I was able to pack color, texture, and personality into my apartment without painting, adding wallpaper, or lighting. Use color in your accessories and furniture pieces. Test multiple floor plans until you find one that feels right for you. Find a way to divide your space if you live in a studio apartment.

What’s your best home secret? Craigslist baby! I purchased so many vintage pieces from Craigslist. Sometimes sellers don’t even know the potential value of what they are selling. I would search daily for keywords like “brass,” “vintage,” “marble,” etc. to find unique pieces for incredible prices.
