It's that time of year! The time when you stare down your gift-wrapping to-do list as it reminds you that not only do you not know exactly how to wrap your little brother's skateboard, you don't even have a square inch of free table space to commit to wrapping it.

So you have two options: Take up residence on the floor and try to make "dust bunnies stuck under the tape" this year's must-have gift wrapping trend, or get creative.

If you mentally chose the latter option — smart thinking. And the clever folks over at Martha Stewart have just the thing for you: A compact DIY gift wrapping station that not only features all the bells and whistles to make quick work of every to-be-wrapped gift on your list, it also slides totally out of sight under your bed or sofa when not in use.

There are instructions for making this DIY wrapping station over at Martha Stewart's site, but here's the gist: Snag a just-right-sized IKEA tabletop from the as-is section, screw some caster wheels to the bottom, add a handle to the side, and adorn the top with a custom grid of wrapping essentials. Here's a road map to the smart solutions pictured above:

  • Elastic bungee cords are linked through a pair of eye hooks to keep standard-size gift wrapping tubes in place — just pull and cut as needed.
  • A rubbery cutting mat is mounted to the big empty space below the wrapping paper to protect the surface and for easy cutting.
  • Ribbon is kept within reach on an inexpensive toilet paper holder mounted to the table top.
  • Two lengths of flexible measuring tape are adhered to the edges of the board to make any necessary measuring easy.
  • Tape dispensers are screwed in in the remaining space for smooth grab-and-tear access.

Voila! It's part storage and part workspace, and it'll make you a gift wrapping pro, if you can spare a few hidden square feet for the cause.
