The collection, called Sicily Is My Love, started as an exhibit at Milan Design Week in 2016. The fashion brand enlisted artists to paint traditional imagery on one hundred of the appliance maker’s retro style refrigerators. Normally a statement piece on their own, the SMEGs featuring homages to the Sicilian carretto garnered a ton of international attention. In fact, Neiman Marcus just started selling the one of a kind pieces in October 2017—for $50,000 a pop.
If you’re into the imagery but not into the price tag, the line has expanded to small appliances as well. While decidedly cheaper but still luxury territory at $600 each, the collection includes a tea kettle, toaster, and citrus juicer featuring art in the classic Italian style. The three items are available for preorder at Neiman Marcus.
And if you’re worried about a $600 toaster prematurely kicking the bucket, take some solace in the fact that the SMEG appliance won a Red Dot award in 2015, an “internationally recognized quality seal.”
The Sicily collection also includes a stand mixer, blender, espresso machine and macerating juicer on SMEG’s website, but are not currently available for purchase or preorder.
