Smell That? IKEA x Byredo Is Coming To Transform Your Home’s Scent
If you had to create an eau de IKEA, what what it smell like? Freshly unboxed plywood? Sweaty allen wrench? Meatballs? Well, we may soon find out. The retailer announced during their annual Democratic Design Day event this week that they’re collaborating with Swedish perfume brand Byredo.
So far, the only hint about the collaboration we have so far is that founder Ben Gorham is working with IKEA “on the idea of ‘invisible design’ by adding scents in the home.” What exactly this limited edition collection will include is still under wraps, but you can bet we’ll sniff it out eventually.
“Understanding that smell is the sense with the most powerful influence on memory, mood and emotion, IKEA is curious to explore the role of scent in the home, the carriers and the products, as well as how people can integrate scents in completely new ways,” says a statement from the company. I’m counting on you all to brainstorm some of these completely new ways in the comments.
“I know most people have associations of visiting their grandmother’s house – whether it’s her perfume or the flowers or her cooking – smell is a very relevant part of the home,” Gorham tells IKEA Today. “It creates a sense of comfort and security. We seldom speak of it and I think this project enforces that as well: getting people to think about smell.”
“We’re trying to develop a ton of smells enforcing the idea that everyone has a different relationship to it, and nothing is right or wrong,” he continues. “I think we’re working on using scent to communicate emotions and tell stories of people, culture and design. It’s a layer we’ve imagined can add a very intimate experience to this scale that IKEA works in.”
Well, we can’t wait to smell what IKEA and Byredo are cooking. Though we’ll have to—the collection is expected to launch sometime in 2019.
