This Shelf Is Made from More Than 4,000 Recycled Chopsticks
For decorative options that combine eco-consciousness and minimalism, look no further than this modular shelving unit, SMĪLE, which is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter.
One glance at the stylish shelf will absolutely make you happy. If you’re concerned about the environment, then knowing that the SMĪLE unit is partially composed of 4,276 recycled chopsticks should make your grin grow even wider.
To begin with, the chopsticks are taken to a factory where they are then transformed into raw material. The new resulting materials are used to create the final product. In addition to the highly durable recycled chopsticks, each shelf is built from a set of recycled steel frames clad in a matte black finish. Aside from upcycling, efficiency is also a major part of the modular shelving unit’s design: it accommodates up to five shelves per frame, allows for various colors and sizes to be combined and can be customized by mixing and matching different units to suit your personal aesthetic. The durability and modular nature of the shelf allows you to rearrange it as many times as you want.
You can choose from three different sizes (small, medium and large), and three color palettes (almond, walnut and natural). To enhance the unique wood patterns, each of the shelves are coated in an eco-friendly vegetable-based oil.
The installation process is easy, too; each shelf comes with a matrix that helps to easily connect each piece. Simply tape it to the wall and mount the shelves according to your preferred setup.
