I was having another boy! But...his room was presently my study. It needed to be gutted and begun again from scratch. As a long-time thrift addict and all round interior junkie I was pumped to start the process.
First things first...the colour. It had to be green, or green in some way and cowboys were a must (I had 2 suitcases full of vintage army/cowboy figurines that needed a place..). I painted an old (ugly!) cot army green and it was on. No storage at all meant that I had to think creative. Firstly the ladder clothes rack made from recycled wood and rope. Smith's dad Michael put it together for me and bolted it to the ceiling and floor. Secondly the plastic drink crates in different colours; they too were bolted to the wall and made great pockets of storage for knitted jumpers, bedsheets etc..
I found a cute secondhand cupboard and finally a set of lockers pulled apart and bolted to the walls solved the storage quandary. The broken down cement wall behind Smith's cot was in my eyes an added bonus of having a very old house. One day it will make a fabulous bed-head!
I wanted wallpaper for the facing wall and by sheer luck had found the perfect minty green paper however when we laid it out my calculations had been wrong. We didn't have enough to cover the 3.8m high walls! To get around this problem I decided to use the window height as the wallpaper guide and it ended up working well. Bracket free shelving up and the final little knick knack touches (my favourites). I often walk in Smith's room and smile.
