Southern California Surf Style

Aug 26, 2010

Having grown up on the beaches of Southern California, I get a little squeamish at the mention of "surf-inspired decor," if only because the look can often veer into campy territory: hibiscus-print upholstery and crested wave light switch covers.

However, the mellow beach town that I call home on the California coast gets much of its identity from the surf culture, so it's only natural that it inform our design — but in a more organic way.

Shown above, left to right:
1 A Driftwood Coat Rack is perfect for the landing strip in any surf-inspired home. Driftwood Towel or Coat Rack; Etsy or make one yourself
2 This Special Love Seat recalls the wooden longboards of surfing's early days; Etsy - $2,500
3 Wrap up in this cozy throw around a beach bonfire or drape it across the foot of the bed; Hamam Towel; Souk - $24
4 Made from recycled vending machine coffee cups, this Recycled Tide Clock is both functional and a nice design object; Wetsand Surfshop - $45.95
5 To make a home more lived-in and for entertaining guests, lay out an interesting coffee table book; The California Surf Project; Barnes & Noble - $25
