What is the advantage of SMALL? I think a small home makes you very aware of what you need and use, it makes you think about your surroundings and really appreciate your space and the items within it. To me a small home is like being given a little nugget of gold - as it's so precious you can't be wasteful with it, you need to use every tiny bit to create something beautiful. Small in Sydney also means we can afford to live (10 minute walk to the city), but I don't think a smaller sized house is a compromise at all when you have the beautiful Sydney Harbour literally on your doorstep!
What's your favorite resource for your home?
Favourite resources for ideas and inspiration are Home Beautiful & Real Living magazines, AT (of course!), Desire to Inspire & SFGirlByBay.
Fave furniture resources are Matt Blatt and Milan Direct. Secretly though, we just cant resist the affordable yet stylish Swedish temptress that is Ikea.
What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?
If I had to choose only one favourite element, I would say its the light that comes into this little house, it is absolutely fabulous - our last apartment was bigger than this house but south facing (we're in the southern hemisphere dont forget, so it was d-a-r-k), not a single slither of direct light came in. This little house gets sun in from all angles, all day. There is nothing that makes me happier than a light and sunny home, it feels like a beach house in the city!
If I could pick another favourite element, I would say the original features - the step which is has worn down over 100 years of use to let the light peek in under the door, the deep skirting boards, the original floorboards. These are all things you cant reproduce in a modern house.
