If you're not one of the lucky few who have purchased an A/V receiver within the past 2-3 years that came included with speaker calibration tools, you may want to check out this nifty little app developed by the team at Deep Focus Technologies.
Like a sound pressure level meter for your surround sound speakers, the app offers audio analysis tools to support balancing speaker levels and a delay calculator to assist in setting the appropriate delay between front and rear speakers.
The concept itself is fairly simple: picking up measurements from your iPhone, it calculates to make sure the delay time and sync is all on point. Since a store-bought SPL meter will probably run you a good $20-$50, depending the brand you buy, the iPhone alternative seems like a pretty financially sound solution if you're just looking to make it sound "right," but not "perfect."
How does it work? Simply point and click with your iPhone to get the readings, and fine tune accordingly. It's as simple as that.
You can grab the Theater Tool app from the iTunes store for $2.
