As we approach a brand new season, you may find yourself with an extra spring (pun intended) in your step. Instead of lounging on the couch watching football or recovering from heavy holiday food comas, spring's warmer weather and abundance of green causes us to shed our down coats for short sleeves, head outdoors, and crave light, fresh foods.

It's important to welcome spring into our homes, too. But we're not just talking about finally dry cleaning your duvet. "Cleaning is also a way to clear our minds," says Heather Askinosie, a crystal and Feng Shui expert, co-founder of Energy Muse, and co-author of Crystal Muse: Everyday Rituals to Tune into the Real You. "As we clean and dust our space, it acts as a meditation that helps our mind become more clear. When we become more clear, the answers we seek come to us because we are in a clear space to receive. Cleaning is a form of self therapy and a way to gain clarity."

According to Heather, incorporating the ancient practice of Feng Shui into spring cleaning is a way to facilitate this emotional and mental cleansing. Feng Shui involves intentionally creating a home environment that manifests increased wealth, health, better relationships, and balance. Follow Heather's three tips for how to add Feng Shui to your spring cleaning to add a sparkle to your apartment and your spirit.

Let spring inside

"Open up all the windows. Wash down the blinds and clean the curtains. Let fresh air in. This allows any unwanted energy to be released."

Sage advice

"Sage your home to energetically clear your space. Sage is a sacred plant that has been used since ancient times. It is known as a purifier. Burning it helps to drive out negative energy and restore balance to your space. Make sure that you have a fireproof container before you burn your sage. Let the sage catch fire and allow it to burn for about 30 seconds. Then, blow it out.

With the doors and windows open, carry the smoking sage around the outside of the door and frame. Then, walk back inside and begin saging the rest of your space by moving clockwise through it. Using a feather or your hand, waft the smoke into the corners of all the rooms and up to the ceiling. When you're finished, extinguish the sage stick inside the fireproof container."

Crystals? Of quartz!

"Add black tourmaline outside your front door for protection. Try placing it in a plant or underneath your doormat. Putting pyrite in the southeast corner of your home will manifest prosperity for the upcoming season."

Turns out, spring cleaning isn't all dusting and donating. After all, what good is all that work if your space still feels energetically burdened from dark and cold winter months? Feng shui allows you to infuse your space with spring's unique seasonal energy, ripe with new beginnings, growth, and hope.

"Spring cleaning is powerful," adds Heather. "As the seasons change, we are able to let sunshine and light in through the windows. The more we attune to the seasons, the more we align with the natural rhythms of life and nature. Instead of working against the cycles of nature, we work with them and life becomes easier."
