Starting a Collection: Begin With One Thing You Love

Earlier today, Beth took a look at a range of glass collections. We're always curious, how does a collection start? We took a closer look at one of the displays, the beautiful glass collection that Dave and Melanie recently shared on the Apartment Therapy group pool and in their entry in Fall Colours contest...

Often, a collection begins haphazardly, with something you love. Then you see a display somewhere that sticks in your mind. And something ignites. In this case, they started with the striking red vase in the center, a legacy from a stylin' grandma, and inspired by a display at the Parker in Palm Springs, the collection grew through visits to thrift stores and flea markets.

Take a look around your own home. What do you collect? If you'd have asked us, we would've scoffed, "I'm so not a collector". But...when I was asked to pull together photographs of things that I love in my home, I realized that that wasn't true. They may not be displayed together but it turns out that I have a love of sculptures of body parts and all things Victorian and gothic.

What about you? What do you love and collect, consciously or unconsciously? How are they displayed in your home?
