When we purchased our 1954 ranch home earlier this year, nothing had been renovated or updated since it was built which was awesome (we get to update it in our own style! we can keep some of the awesome original design elements!) and also not awesome (the electrical was pulling in barely the legal minimum! some of the pipes were corroded and had leaks!). The biggest element that needed updating right off the bat was the kitchen.

The minute our realtor handed over the keys (yay Jon!) we immediately went to work on the kitchen. The kitchen had no appliances when we purchased it, except for the sink, and just had a tiny single wall of cabinetry and countertop, about seven or eight feet long total. The floor was a crazy green vinyl (if you look in the "before" photos you can see it - I honestly thought it was a weird carpet before I saw the home in person!) The cabinets were a nice oak, but covered in layers of paint (the last being this hideous glossy cream) and the countertops were an equally crazy red vinyl that swooped all the way up to also serve as a backsplash.

We did as much as we could ourselves DIY style, and hired people when it was way too daunting or dangerous. I now am in absolute love with our finished kitchen.

We really enjoy cooking in it every day, and I'm really proud of the work that we did. I also am vowing to never scrape linoleum off of a floor ever, ever again.

Here's the list of what we did along with time it took and the associated costs:

  • Scraped off all of the green vinyl floor: 2 weeks of working on the evenings/weekends, $0
  • Pulled out the old cabinets and countertops, sanding wall down: 2 days, $0
  • Removed weird half-wall separating kitchen and dining: few hours, $0
  • Knocked down half of the wall separating the kitchen and the now pantry: 2 days, $0
  • Putting up new drywall and patching holes, 2 weeks (we did about half of it ourselves, and called in a pro for the rest), $250
  • Moving gas line for stove and updating plumbing: $900
  • Update electrical so it can handle modern appliances and be up to code. We hired electricians it took them about a month to do all of the electrical for the whole home, $2,200 the cost for the kitchen.
  • Purchase appliances at Home Depot (GE Artistry series dishwasher and fridge, Whirlpool gas slide-in range with convection oven), we installed all of them ourselves: 1 day, $4,000
  • Refinish floors and patch (there was hardwood hiding beneath the hideous vinyl!!): Hired an expert, took them about a week to do and dry, $2100 for our whole house, so probably $500 or less of that was for kitchen.
  • Scrape all the hideous glossy cream latex paint off the original sink, revealing the original white enamel finish: 2 days, a lot of cursing, $0.
  • Restore and refinishing the salvaged butcher block industrial prep island from Queen City: 2 days, island was $120, $30 in supplies to refinish.
  • New kitchen cabinets from local cabinet maker, Danny @ Handicraft : $2,940. Danny is awesome. Hire him immediately. He is meticulous and makes beautiful things.
  • Soapstone counters from M.Teixeira Soapstone: We paid to have them cut to size and to have the edges finished, but we brought them home ourselves and installed thanks to my strong friends. few hours, $1,800
  • Backsplash matte white subway tile from The Tile Shop: We tried to hire two different people to do the job, had one guy do a horrid job so we fired him halfway through the job and ruined about half of the tile that we had to rip out from his garbage attempt. Let's just say that mistakes were made. We ended up tiling ourselves and renting a saw from Home Depot. If we don't count the repurchasing of the tile, it was around $300 for tile and materials, and $100 to rent the saw. Took us 1 weekend to complete.

GRAND TOTAL: $12,600
