Stunning Subway & Underground Stations from Around the World

Subways don't have to be ugly or utilitarian — in fact, underground stations house some of the most gorgeous and creative architectural design around. Follow me after the jump and let's take a look at some jaw dropping railway stations from around the world.

With a creative use of color, texture, light, and material, these otherwise claustrophobic spaces have been transformed into site-specific works of art. Here are a few beauties that I'd love to visit one day. There are just so many interesting undergrounds to experience that it's hard to choose only a few.

Marienplatz Station, Munich, Germany

Kiyevskaya Station - Koltsevaya Line Hall, Moscow, Russia

Westfriedhof Station, Munich, Germany

Elektrozavodskaya Station, Moscow, Russia

Drassanes Station, Barcelona, Spain

Formosa Boulevard Station, Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Arts et Métiers Station, Paris, France

Which Undergrounds are your favorites? To see some more gorgeous undergrounds, check out io9 for the compilation they've put together.
