Style Lessons from Today’s Small Cool Entries (Vote for Your Favs!)

Every home has something to teach and each small home in the Small Cool contest holds lessons and tricks for living well while living small. Below is some wisdom from today’s crop of entries including the importance of furniture with extra storage, a studio with style cohesion and a lesson in restraint.

For some studio apartments, creating “zones” for bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms works very well, but John’s home proves that keeping a cohesive look (and a stylish one at that) throughout the entire home can go a long way toward making the home appear bigger than it is.

Christina’s sofa is more of a workhorse than it looks. Under the cushions is storage space which she uses to house blankets and other bedding. When buying furniture for a small home, be on the lookout for furniture that offers extra storage.

Similar to Christina’s sofa (above), Carina chose a bef for her daughter with built-in drawers. It becomes a bed and dresser in one and prevents dust bunnies under the bed!

We are big fans of the sofa table and it especially makes sense in a small home that could use a bit of extra storage. An added bonus is not having the blocky back of the sofa visible.

Just because you live in a small home doesn’t mean you can’t have some of the “extras”. Kimberly added a swing which doesn’t take up much space and adds an element of whimsy and fun.

These sloped ceilings could easily feel like they are closing in on you, but painting the walls and ceiling white staves off that feeling and makes the room feel bright and fresh.

Annie’s kitchen is sorely lacking in cabinets, but she used hanging rods to store pots and pans and other kitchen gadgets which is not only a good use of space, but makes them easily accessible.

It’s almost human nature to take up the space you have. Amanda could have put more furniture in this open room but she chose to keep it open which adds to the space’s drama.
